The land of the podcast AHHHHHHHH!

Ahhh I have finally discovered the land of the podcast. I subscribed to http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/brainstuff/id260335249 to start out learning about brainastuff and applying it to my classroom. For personal use I then subscribed to http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/how-to-tour-italy/id303853823 because I am planning on going to Italy this summer.
I will continue to blog about more podcasts I have discovered as well as read about your discoveries as well!
I am finishing up my podcast on my first grade visual arts lessons and will be excited to post my URL to my first podcast soon. Until then happy podding?! 8-)

Here is my Animoto Video

HI Everyone,
What fun I had today getting to know animoto. I can see myself using this fun and easy to use program all the time. In fact after my project I made several for my friends and boyfriend and they are so easy to make and look great. I love the freeplaymuscic.com site. It takes the worry about using music for my projects and what a selection! I could see myself using animoto to make my own slide shows for example the life cycle of the butterfly- made by Lindsey Walberg. I also plan to make a year end slide show of all the events that we enjoyed this year in class!

I also used picnik.com to edit a few of my photographs. I used the red eye reduction, tried to put a border around it but I needed to pay money for that, and I cropped my shots. I was not as impressed with this editing program and will be interested in how others interpret this program. I prefer to use my iphoto photo editing software.

I hope you enjoy my short animoto project. I took a workshop at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center this past summer. It was called Integrating the Arts into Science. I have taken 8 different workshops this year after school and I have received my Arts Integration Level 1 certificate. I love integrating the arts into my curriculum. It really deepens the learning for the children. This video is about a lesson on Water Dances that I taught last week! Enjoy!

I watched the video A Vision of Students Today

Hi All,
I watched the short video called A Vision of Students Today made at Kansas State College by Michael Welsch. I liked the creative nature of the video - the panning shots of graphiti written on the walls and student chairs was both original and interesting. I liked how Michael got his message across with the students holding up written messages that put the message all together. During the video it hit me hard how different it is for students today in school, then it was for me. I realized that the students probably have those cards in their computer that give them internet access anywhere. One girl said she spent most of her time on facebook during class. I realized how shoddy my education would have been if I had access to these distracting things during class. I am sure I would be cruising my facebook and buying things on ebay during a boring lecture. I am glad that I did not have access to that. I am experiencing my daughter going thru her educational years and I wonder how she will turn out. She is in 6th grade and had to do a power point on Cambodia. This would be the equivalent to a written report that I would have done when I was young. To do my report I would have gone to the library and checked out books on Cambodia. I would have read the information and pulled out things relevant to my report. My daughter on the other hand, looks things up on Google and then copies and pastes things into her report. Then I rag on her about plagerism and she changes them into her own words. I do not really think she is learning or retaining the information as well as she would if she read books about the subject. I am slowly getting used to all of this technology. There are so any great things about it also. I just had a blast making several movies on animoto and sending them to friends. I am embracing it however I spend WAY TO MUCH time on the computer. So much that I have pain in both wrists and a painful neck. I am quite certain it is from my unergonomic postures while surfing the web and hammering on my keyboard. Oh what to do...what to do.......

Hello and welcome to my educational blog! My name is Sarah Kamala and I live on the island of Maui up on the slopes of our island volcano, Haleakala. I have been teaching K-4th grades here for 8 years, with first grade in the last 4. I am originally from Laguna Beach, California and then moved up to San Francisco where I went to San Francisco State University. I attained my BA in Psychology and my Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. My daughter, now 12 was also born in the Bay Area.

I am most definitely a MAC person but am proficient in both the MAC and the PC. I love my Mac Book and have been known to sleep with it under my pillow! The school that I teach at is a technology focused school. We each have 8-10 Mac computers in our classrooms and school money is spent on technology. We have several mobile labs and smart boards as well as 2 large computer rooms with brand new large screen macs and now we have recently purchased a mobile podcast lab. We have purchased a license for Lexia, which is a computer based reading program. I love to watch kids learn and grow on Lexia. We also use kidpix of course and math whiz. The funny part about math whiz is that they use a UK english accent in the program, which the kids get a kick out of. I co-run the Digital Media Club which is after school. This is our first year and we are learning a lot! We are doing Public Service Announcements and imovies about school subjects like respect and we are filming and making imovies to play on our morning broadcast. I am devoted to learning all I can about technology. I want to be the person people seek out with their technology questions. For now, I am the one who has a lot!

I applied for the Boxley Scholarship here at Peru and I won it! I am SO grateful and feel truly blessed to be going to Peru State College. I am truly enjoying this Masters program and I do not know what I used to do with my spare time. Even thought I will be happy to graduate I am going to miss attending these on-line classes. I plan to see what doors can open for me after attaining my Masters degree. I may want to leave the classroom one day and go into a curriculum specialist role. I would love to hear from others about what they might do with their degree. Of course this degree also helps me jump 2 steps up on the pay scale which is always helpful in this profession.
